Hate is a living thing and desires to be fed.
Confederate soldiers escorting Union prisoners to a POW camp, stop at a small farmstead when they discover the war is over, and the South lost. They struggle with each other, some having lost their humanity long ago. Azalene, the Southern belle who owns the farm awaits, but dreads the return of her husband from the war.
Then renegade confederates arrive and add fuel to the fire.
The soldiers are split. Some help the Union prisoners while most try to kill them. Azalene’s husband comes home, but he wears a Union officer’s uniform. A murder sets off an all-out confrontation. Caught in the middle, Azalene and her children must fight for their lives and defend the secret they keep.
Her farm is part of the Underground Railroad.
